Community Mental Health Services are distinct from inpatient mental health services, and play a vital role in supporting people between 18 to 65 years old in the community with a severe mental illness and psychiatric disability throughout the recovery process.

Community Mental Health Services support people with psychiatric disability to manage their self-care, improve social and relationship skills and achieve broader quality of life via physical health, social connectedness, housing, education and employment.

St John of God Health Care Burwood provides a comprehensive range of mental health services and treatment types that put you at the center of our care.

Information, referral and counselling are provided to individuals and families where language or cultural issues make it difficult to access mainstream services. An individual may refer themselves or someone else (e.g. priest, doctor, service provider, family member or friend) can refer on their behalf, provided they have been given consent.

The issues for which information, referral and counselling is sought are varied and often complex because they compounded by cultural factors, the migration experience and history of the person. Counselling is provided to individuals, couples and families when they have identified an issue which is impacting negatively on their life or something they which to change and require support to deal with it more effectively.

The Adult Mental Health team is a multidisciplinary team that provides assessment and recovery orientated time limited care for people living in the community who are assessed as needing care coordination. Comprehensive Assessment Service for Psychosis and At Risk (CASPAR) is a service provided by SESLHD that provides in-reach into three local headspace centres (located at Bondi Junction, Hurstville, and Miranda) to deliver early identification, care coordination, assertive outreach, and targeted interventions to support the ‘missing middle’ youth population. Largely these are young people who have mental health and recovery needs greater than what can be met by headspace alone but do not require the level of care provided by state-based public mental health services.

The ACAP Psychology, Counselling and Social Work Clinics are committed to providing evidence-based assessments, treatment and intervention for the community free of charge. There is no time limit placed on service delivery (session limit) and Medicare/GP referral is not required. In addition to the broader community, our Clinics welcome international students, asylum seekers and refugees. We have student practitioners who can offer bi-lingual services in a range of community languages.

The Psychology Clinic is a student-led clinic, staffed by postgraduate students who work under the supervision of clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists.

The Older Persons Mental Health Service provides time limited care for older people who may require specialist mental health support, in collaboration with their GP. This includes people with severe behavioural problems associated with dementia. Usually this service is for people over 65 years of age. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may come to the service at a younger age.

Lou’s Place provide Empowering services including Crisis intervention, referrals, innovative trauma-informed programs, free legal advice, supporting clients with court appearances or medical appointments and case management. Lou’s Place also offer a range of Heling activities and programs such as Art, sewing, music, yoga, creative writing, jewellery-making, and health workshops.

MindSpot treatment courses have been developed to provide a set of lessons and resources to individuals managing their mental health. Courses are based on well-tested principles of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), shown to be the most effective treatment for reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Courses include online lessons, access to therapists, practical skills and symptom tracking tools.

Leichhardt Women’s Community Health Centre (LWCHC) is an accredited service operated by women for women. Mental and emotional health – depression, anxiety, social isolation, domestic and family violence, relationships, trauma and complex trauma including intergenerational trauma.

They offer several types of counselling and all options are free of charge or low cost. Some of our counselling is reserved for women on low incomes and who are living in the local area (the 124 kms of Sydney’s inner city, inner west and south western suburbs) while other counselling services is not limited to women’s geographic area or financial status.

Counselling for Women Partners of Gay/Bisexual Men is for women in NSW whose male partners are sexually attracted to men. They can provide counselling face-to-face, by telephone, by online video consultations. They also run support groups.

Counselling for women who’ve experienced childhood sexual abuse is available two days a week from counsellors employed by Full Stop Australia. This counselling is provided for women currently experiencing financial disadvantage. Appointments must be made through Full Stop Australia.

Project Youth run lots of FREE programs to help young people to be safe, happy, healthy, and able to make informed decisions. These programs aim to intervene early to reduce and stop escalation of issues and concerns you may have. Project Youth’s Adolescent Family Counsellor (AFC) provides family therapy to young people and their families.

The primary role of this counselling is to explore with families:

• the issues that are creating conflict and tension within the family
• Introduce new information to enable family members to make the changes they need to prevent the risk of homelessness of young people.

Naamuru Parent and Baby Unit provides holistic, multidisciplinary specialist health care that is parent and infant centred, family and carer inclusive, and culturally sensitive. Inpatient services are available for parents who are experiencing significant mental health problems in the perinatal period (before, during and after birth), and who are the primary care-giver for their baby (up to 12 months of age).

The Mary Aikenhead Clinic provides high quality psychological and counselling services to the community at a low cost. The Mary Aikenhead Clinic provides a range of formal psychological assessment packages for children, adolescents and adults. All assessments involve a comprehensive interview, psychometric testing, a report and a feedback session. Assessments can be offered in the following areas: Cognitive/intellectual and adaptive functioning, learning or educational difficulties, mental health and behavioural concerns and specialised assessments of developmental difficulties of childhood.

Centre 350 works in schools delivering our group programs as well as individual counselling.
STRIVE Group Program: Anxiety, depression, academic stress, low self-esteem and family breakdown can overwhelm. STRIVE was developed in response to schools reporting an increase in mental health issues affecting students. The STRIVE program is a preventative program. It works with school teachers and student welfare staff to identify students who are at-risk of experiencing mental-health issues and who may be at-risk of disengaging from education. The program is facilitated with identified students in school. It works to give students the coping strategies and emotional regulation skills they need to overcome obstacles.
Peer Support Groups: provides a therapeutic space for students to discuss issues they are struggling with, share ideas on how to work through these issues and build social connections. Gidget House locations provide free individual psychological counselling services delivered face-to face. Gidget Houses are accessible and provide compassionate holistic care for expectant and new parents and their families.

A safe haven where expectant and new parents are respected, and the needs of each unique family are paramount. Payment for services provided by Gidget House is covered by Medicare bulk billing. A referral and a mental health care plan from a GP are required in order to access this funding.

We provide a variety of interventions and therapies for older persons who are experiencing acute symptoms of their mental health disorder and requires care within an inpatient setting. A person admitted to the unit can either be voluntary or involuntary under the NSW Mental Health Act (2007). Consumer care is provided by a multidisciplinary team which includes, psychiatrists, registrars, nurses, social worker, psychologist, occupational therapist, and peer worker.

A mental health clinician authorised by a consultant psychiatrist will conduct an assessment to determine whether an admission is the best option.

The St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney Gambling Treatment Program is a government funded service1. Our service provides FREE, confidential and highly effective treatment for people who are concerned about, or affected by, problem gambling.
Our expert team offer individually tailored treatment sessions based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – the gold standard in the treatment of problem gambling. We can also assist problem gamblers with a range of other issues that commonly co-occur with problem gambling (e.g., anxiety and depression).

Caritas is an inpatient mental health unit that provides safe and inclusive care to adults who are require acute mental health care. Our team of nurses, doctors and allied health staff provide holistic and collaborative care during the acute phase of mental illness.

The Statewide Statewide Intellectual Disability Mental Health Outreach Service (SIDMHOS) is a specialist mental health service that supports the needs of people with a diagnosed mental health problem and cooccuring intellectual disability, currently receiving care, who need increased specialised support. Support is individualised, ranging from advice and problem solving local pathways through to collaborative case reviews and care planning with the treating team.

SWOP offers free and confidential short-term counselling to anyone working in the sex industry.

The Transcultural Mental Health Line is a telephone service available to support people who live in NSW and who are from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Mental health and wellbeing information and brief over-the-phone support for callers from CALD communities in NSW. The Transcultural Mental Health Centre (TMHC) works with health professionals and communities across New South Wales to support positive mental health for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The Transcultural Mental Health Line is a telephone service available to support people who live in NSW and who are from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Focused psychological therapy is delivered by Psychologists, Mental Health Social Workers, Credentialed Mental Health Nurses and Mental Health Occupational Therapists.

CESPHN commissions PSS Project 54 which reduces barriers to accessing psychological support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing outreached-based, culturally appropriate, and sensitive support in locations across the region including La Perouse, Glebe and Sutherland LGA.

WAYS psychologists offer short and long term individual and family therapy, educational and mental health assessments, psychoeducation workshops and information seminars on a range of topics that are delivered to schools and community groups.

Youthblock provides free, safe and confidential support, counselling and health services for young people aged 12-24.

They can offer support, information and someone to talk to about: Your relationships, family problems, School, sex, mental and physical health, accommodation and money, drugs and alcohol, and more.

Support offered to families and parents with transgender children from the Gender Centre. Finding out your child is transgender is often an experience that leaves you as a parent wondering “where do I go to find out how to support my child”. The Gender Centre has a case work support program that works with families. This involves access to our counsellor’s for the family as well as a case worker. The model that we offer is flexible. Sometimes families identify that they need individual support and in this instance a case worker is allocated to parents and a separate case worker is available to support your child. At other times families identify they prefer to work collaboratively and want to see only one case worker together. Either option is available and is one which is discussed in the initial meeting you.

The program dedicated to supporting the unique needs of children from serving and ex-serving ADF families has been made possible by the Australian Government.

Bears of Hope facilitates a national program of healing workshops on managing grief and discovering coping strategies to create a foundation for the future. These focus on both individuals and couples and they offer a supportive environment to bond with other bereaved parents.

The Mary Aikenhead Clinic provides high quality psychological and counselling services to the community at a low cost. The Mary Aikenhead Clinic is a teaching facility staffed by postgraduate psychology students/provisional psychologists, who provide holistic and client centred services, using a multidisciplinary approach. Staff at the clinic work closely with other health disciplines at ACU, including dieticians, exercise physiologists, social workers and allied health professionals. Consultation with these supportive disciplines can be sought if required, to ensure our clients receive balanced and comprehensive services.

The Acute Inpatient Units provide multidisciplinary mental health assessment, treatment and care for people during an acute phase of mental illness. Kookaburra Kids Camps are free, and provide young people living in families impacted by mental illness with an opportunity for connection, a chat Group to learn about mental illness and to share, and opportunity to participate in a range of fun activities such as canoeing, archery, giant swings, go-karts and much more! St Vincent’s Older People’s Mental Health Service (OPMHS) is a team of clinicians who provide assessment and management of the common mental health problems in older people through the integrated, multidisciplinary perspectives of medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, and occupational therapy. We see people in the community), including at our outpatient clinic, home visits and visits to Residential Aged Care Facilities. We now also have telehealth options available. We also see inpatients admitted to the SVH geriatric ward.

Anglicare’s EWOP program is a free service to ensure the emotional and mental wellbeing of the elderly. If you or someone you know is a resident of a registered aged care facility who is experiencing mild to moderate mental health symptoms, They are here to help you.

Anglicare’s experienced team provide integrated support that is tailored to the needs of the individual, and includes: counselling, psychology, recreational activities and other non-pharmacological interventions.

Benefits include: mood improvements, reduction in anxiety and stress, increased ability to cope with life changes, increased interest in social activities, trained and dedicated staff who can identify and support mental health needs. Additionally, they provide capacity building training to staff to help you manage mental health issues.

Women Partners offers support with individual counselling and support groups to all women upon learning their partner has been sexually engaging with men. Women Partners offer a safe space for women to share their stories and perspectives whilst managing unexpected changes in their relationship.
